Twitter is Headed in the Wrong Direction by Jerry Hart

This is a good example of why Twitter is headed in the wrong direction, because it’s just propagating fear amongst people as opposed to seeking actual solutions or key information,” said Brennon Slattery, a writer for PC World.

(CNN) — The swine flu outbreak is spawning debate about how people get information during health emergencies — especially at a time when news sources are becoming less centralized.

Buzz about swine flu on Twitter is stirring conversations about how people get health news.

Some observers say Twitter — a micro-blogging site where users post 140-character messages — has become a hotbed of unnecessary hype and misinformation about the outbreak, which is thought to have claimed more than 100 lives in Mexico.

A wide number of people would turn to the site in search of information during an emergency.

Twitter users told their followers to stop eating pork, he said. Health officials have not advised that precaution.

Which side are you on?

  1. In an emergency, is it ok for people to write about their own fears of symptoms and widespread deaths, which can create an uninformed hysteria or NOT?
  2. Are you with PC World?…who say they have been excited about Twitter until recently. Now they find the site to be “an incredibly unreliable source of information.”

The old saying…”buyer beware” could be tweeked on twitter to “reader beware”. We consume so many opinions in such a small amount of time. Each of us needs to take responsibility to consider our sources whereever you get them from. Any source can be reliable vs unreliable. It’s the human condition. One thing is for certain a help. Ready….set….breathe…in this moment you have all you need.

I don’t know if I would be comfortable with forbidding people to speak of their fears or concerns.

In addition to “Tweets” having to do with eating pork, there were also Tweets with links to the CDC page, links to follow CNN, and common sense advice about hand-washing, staying home from work and checking in with your doctor if you have flu-like symptoms.

That said, I would have to add that my views against banning mention of fears or concerns are not really limited to one topic, I like the idea of people being able to say what’s on their minds - offline and online!

Jer
It is your style to remind the Social Media stars that it is our “intention” to create positive energy. Again thank you for keeping the message as pure as the messenger. Love, Pamela
