Now, lets do some Facebook Do’s and Dont’s. There are many “Oh no you didn’t!”, both legally and socially that one must be aware of when using Facebook
Here’s MY 2 CENTS to get us warmed up for Mari!! …..Fun “Oh no you didn’t” moment.
Sandra Soroka who decided to break up with her boyfriend via her Facebook Status update. She felt her boyfriend was going to break up with her anyway so she would beat him to the punch and do it publicly. What followed was ugly. Soon, the online community, through forums such as Digg.com, blog comments, Facebook messages, and more, criticized her for her public breakup; the resulting backlash caused her social Profiles and media to be removed.
CAUTION
Consider that most things in Facebook get posted to your Friends’ News Feed. There’s nothing stopping one of your Friends from forwarding damaging information. In other words as some old renaissance guy said “Taste thee words before ye spit them out.”
Personal Detail is personal right? If you aren’t that close with all your Facebook Friends, make a note of how easy it could be for one of them to find information such as “I’ll be away next week on vacation,” find out where you live, and rob you (or worse).
START HERE Where’s your return on time and investment with Facebook?
First, know that one day you will be so happy you embraced Facebook as one more way to get your information out about news and Events you care about. How can you add value to your community? Back off with the hammering to your friends with specific product sales or offerings, rather give them content that is relevant and useful to your target market, even if it’s not specifically promoting your offering. Think like a thought leader and you’ll find you have more people interested in your community and your message, even if they weren’t initially interested. That doesn’t mean you come across as a neutral content provider, just know that community members want to know that you are honest, sincere and interested in thier needs. Hey, check out politicians as they really got it going on with Facebook.
Add gems of WHO YOU ARE to your profile and make it interesting. Need ideas? Go to the search box and type in your competitors to see if they are there. There are many businesses that are working to develop a strong presence on Facebook.
Only post pics, comments, updates, etc..that your grandma would be proud of. When using your fingers to make your mojo on Facebook always think about your boss or constituents who can make your information even more public down the road, all accessible to others, even if they aren’t your Facebook Friends.
You’re a PARENT
Add your children as Friends. This is probably the biggest recommendation for any parent. Facebook is good for knowing what your children/siblings are doing and where they are. It allows you to know who their Friends are, what Groups they associate with, and it gives you another method of communication that they are familiar with. Add your children as friends and this will put you on level ground with them in a Social Media age. Who knows you may even get to know each other better.
